Review: Crimson Spell, Vol. 5

Crimson Spell, Vol. 5 Crimson Spell, Vol. 5 by Ayano Yamane
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well. I hoped for so much more. I guess this volume is ok, on the same level as the first two, but... But there is this volume 3 Crimson Spell Bd. 3 by Ayano Yamane, which is perfect. So comparing everything with the third volume is very tempting, though maybe not exactly fair. Is there a chance Ms. Yamane makes every third volume much better than the rest? Then all I have to do is to wait for the next one. However, it seems it's going to be a long wait :(

Review: Mog the Forgetful Cat

Mog the Forgetful Cat Mog the Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I picked up this book because it was mentioned in Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science by Richard Dawkins as something he was reading to his daughter. So I got curious.

The book wasn't in our library, so I asked for an interlibrary loan and, meanwhile, picked another book by the same author. I wish I hadn't.

Mog the Forgetful Cat on itself is not very bad, though it feels like something out-of-date. Not a book I would read to a kid now, but rather a book that my parents would listen to as kids.

The real problem was that other book, The Other Goose. They are practically identical! In design, in plot, in moral, in everything that counts. And that makes me sad. What's the point of writing identical books?

Review: The Martian

The Martian The Martian by Andy Weir
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

This review is for the audio edition of The Martian, narrated by R.C. Bray. I happened to hear a dialog about a convertible towards the end of the book first, and my first thought was "It's completely wrong!!! That Bray guy completely messed up the emotions!!!"
'But well, yeah, I know people who liked that recording, so maybe it's not all that bad...' So I decided to give it a shot.
Surprisingly, the narrative style grew on me. By the end of the first disc I already liked it. R.C. Bray turned out to be not that bad with emotions after all. And I really like the way he talked differently (and consistently) for each character. Besides, the monolog at the end that so annoyed me in the book doesn't sound as pathetic in this performance. Maybe saying it out loud is better than reading it? So five stars as opposed to four for the books, solely to acknowledge the narrator.
I still don't like the 'convertible scene'.

Review: Soppy: A Love Story

Soppy: A Love Story Soppy: A Love Story by Philippa Rice
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Most of the time when I pick up a book, it's because I want to be lost in a different world, carried away by the author's and my own imagination. A book is a way to experience and feel things I would never have in real life. This book is unlike any other I've read. It's about little things that make our lives meaningful. It's an autobiography in a sense, but again - different from any other autobiography. They usually paint a picture in broad strokes. This one does it in little laughs. Instead of an otherworldly experience, a reader gets a mirror.

Review: The Big Book of Paw Patrol

The Big Book of Paw Patrol The Big Book of Paw Patrol by Nickelodeon
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I think I'm right to expected much more from a "big book" of anything. This one features each character of the show on a separate page with a couple of pictures, basic information, and the motto. Nothing more. No story. Nothing new. Even a toddler wouldn't be satisfied (and mine wasn't).

Review: Little Quack's Bedtime

Little Quack's Bedtime Little Quack's Bedtime by Lauren Thompson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a really nice book for a bed-time story. It's about a cute duckling Little Quack and his family, the illustrations are good and colorful, though without too many details. The rhythm is calm, the repetitions are perfect - just what you need to put a child to sleep. The ducklings go to sleep one by one, till all the family is happily asleep. I would give it five stars, were it rhymed. That would be a final touch to a good bed-time book into a perfect one.

Review: Splat the Cat Goes to the Doctor

Splat the Cat Goes to the Doctor Splat the Cat Goes to the Doctor by Rob Scotton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Splat the Cat is one of the most beloved characters in our family and we read a lot of stories about him. They are usually nice and unobtrusively instructive, though some are better than others. The idea behind a picture book "someone goes to the doctor" is obviously old. We do want a book to go along with our chatting preparing the kid to go there, right? Unfortunately, this one misses the point. For my kid at least, going for a check-up always also means vaccinations. And what do you think, they are not exactly pleasant. The book, however, completely omits any unpleasant or painful procedures, setting unreasonable expectations. Thus, only three stars - a reasonably good picture book, but nothing special.

Review: Room on the Broom

Room on the Broom Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Facebook told me that today is the second anniversary of me reading Room on the Broom for the first time, but for some reason I never wrote a review. Time to fix it! I picked the book two years ago because of some buzz how it's the best book ever for kids. It's not the best book ever. But. It's pretty close to it! Back then, two years ago, it was the best picture book I had read. I have a new favorite now, but guess what? It's written by the same author!!

Review: Flip-a-Word: Snake Cake

Flip-a-Word: Snake Cake Flip-a-Word: Snake Cake by Yukiko Kido
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It is the first book my son actually read himself! It's better than usual "leveled reading". Simple words, no sentences, bright pictures that actually illustrate the words, interesting pages, the possibility of making a story for ourselves - all these encourage a beginning reader to try.

Review: Red Rising

Red Rising Red Rising by Pierce Brown
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This book is so unbearably, cruelly naive, I'm having a really hard time understanding how it got the "best book" badge. And though it's most often tagged as science fiction, at least it wasn't the best science fiction 2014 ([book:The Martian|18007564] was). This one is about as scientific as a kitchen table. I usually don't do it, but at some point the sheer number of blunders and glaring mistakes made me want to check the author's background, his education in particular. What did I find out? Nothing. The wiki page is empty but for some information about his three books. The official web page and goodreads profile repeat the "biography" given on the last page of the book, word to word, with that rubbish about getting to Hogwarts after college. I wasn't amused enough to try to dig deeper. This "mysteriousness" is as childish as the plot. Several times along the book I felt as if it was written by a teenager, and it's not a compliment here, because the author is apparently is a grown man. Or maybe not so grown...

The naivety is not the only sin of this book, far from that actually. The author has some big problems visualizing things. Descriptions of places are terrible to begin with: they don't provide an image, don't take the reader to some other world with some new experience, not at all. Worse than that, they are inconsistent. It's like the places, buildings, terrains, things shift to better suit the plot.  I tried to re-read some descriptions two or three times, to make at least some sense of them; it didn't help. The spatial orientation also suffers greatly, despite the map.

Places are not the only inconsistent things in the book. It feels like the protagonist exists in some sort of a bubble, outside of which the world stops, or better yet - doesn't exist at all. Like the author couldn't keep too much information in mind and partitioned it, forgetting everything outside the immediate surroundings of the protagonist. It creates a lot of confusion; things just don't add up. There should have been some unavoidable consequences of his actions that are never mentioned, much less happen. The apotheosis is a scene near the end, where Darrow fights two enemies in full armor. Only he can do anything about them, because he too is armored. They play havoc among Darrow's followers. Then he falls away with one of them, fights and defeats him, and return to the main scene, where ..... surprise! The second opponent never gets mentioned again. And there are a lot of loose ends, it's just one example (that sent me laughing under the table).

Some reviews suggest that the second book is much, much better. I wish to beleive it, but can't right now. Red rising is emotionally naive, poorly written, and intellectually immature. I will give a short to the second one, but surely not right away.

Review: National Geographic Readers: Spiders

National Geographic Readers: Spiders National Geographic Readers: Spiders by Laura F. Marsh
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The pictures are very good, the text could be much better. A more organized way of presenting would be good, but it's a common flaw of the National Geographic Readers books.

Review: Fireflies

Fireflies Fireflies by Margaret C. Hall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The pictures are perfect, very good for kids to get familiar with fierflies. The text is scientifically more or less correct. But. The way the author chose to present the material is dreadful, certainly not for kids.

Review: Which Witch?

Which Witch? Which Witch? by Eva Ibbotson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"...there really was no way of telling which witch was which." I picked up this book because of the reference in the Castle Hangnail, where Ursula Vernon mentioned Which Witch? as an inspiration. And since I really liked Castle Hangnail, I couldn't miss this one.

I guess the author was a pioneer in the genre. Though he book is a bit out-of-date now, it's still not like the lot of children's books. It's really very amusing.

Only four stars is for being just amusing, nothing more. It was a good read, but I will not read it again.
