Trachyneis aspera (Ehrenberg) Cleve 1894

Meet an elephant-sized diatom, Trachyneis aspera (Ehrenberg) Cleve 1894. It is presumably a cosmopolitan species (though it seems to be more polar than tropical) with two pages of varieties that are not all that easy to distunguish, especially if the species is not all that abundant. But the species itself is very impressive and recognizable.
The valves are huge, up to 300 um and tend to be asymmetric. You can see that the axial area is unilateral. The feature of the species is the fascia that broadens towards margins, but doesn't reach them. Does it look like bow-tie? This diatom is ready for a party.
