Thalassionema nitzschioides (Grunow) Mereschkowsky 1902 is a unique diatom, who just doesn't care if it's warm, cold, or icy. This relaxed attitude allows it to live and bloom in every ocean.
It was described as a Synedra in 1862 by Grunow and then moved to Thalassionema in 1902 by a Russian botanist Mereschkowsky in a Russian journal Scripta Botanica in French. And that is the last thing that happened to this species taxonomically-wise. It's everywhere! There are, however, several close relatives that are hard to differentiate from T. nitzschioides without SEM.
