Diatoms of the Bering Sea

Actinoptychus senarius

Does this diatom remind you of something?
Actinoptychus senarius (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg 1843. Described more than 170 years ago, this marine species is readily recognizable. In the Bering Sea it is never abundant, but almost always present. In more than half of my samples there is at least one of them (in a lot of cases, only one).
