Rhaphoneis amphiceros (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg 1844

Rhaphoneis amphiceros (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg 1844, as you can guess, was described years ago (1844, oh my!), and it's a recognizable and widespread species, common on marine coasts. This araphid diatom is 20 to 100 um long, 18-25 um wide, with a narrow linear sternum and 6-7 striae in 10 um.
The bizarre part is that it's not at all common in the North Pacific. It was found in exactly 6 samples (5% of all sediment samples I counted) with a staggering total of 9 valves. Surprisingly, all of them are in the Chukchi Sea. Not a single Rhaphoneis in the Bering Sea so far. Nevertheless, it is frequent enough down core in the Bering Sea.
Most useful paper: Sato, S., T. Watanabe, T. Nagumo, and J. Tanaka (2011) Valve morphogenesis in an araphid diatom Rhaphoneis amphiceros (Rhaphoneidaceae, Bacillariophyta). Phycological Research 59: 236-243.
