Thalassiosira eccentrica

One less species in the counts! I had Thalassiosira eccentrica sensu Beth and Thalassiosira eccentrica sensu Sancetta. On closer examination, however, they turned out to be two forms, heavily and lightly silicified, of the same species, Thalassiosira eccentrica (Ehrenberg) Cleve 1904. Happily combined two rows...

This is a common species in coastal waters of the temperate zone in the Northern Hemisphere. The diameter of the valves varies from 15 to 110 um. The distinct features are 1) eccentric areolae arangement (on top of fasciculate structure) and 2) a central areola with a subcentral fultoportula encircled by six areolae.

The most useful paper: Fryxell, G. A. and G. R. Hasle (1972) Thalssiosira eccentrica (Ehrenb.) Cleve, T. symmetrica sp. nov., and some related centric diatoms. Journal of Phycology, 8: 297-317.
