Fragilariopsis reginae-jahniae Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin 2000

Fragilariopsis reginae-jahniae Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin 2000 is one of the most abundant diatoms in the Bering and Chukchi seas. It's present almost always, especially in samples from underneath sea ice: this Fragilariopsis seems to be associated with sea ice stronger than others. It's big (20.1-84 um long, 3.8-60 um wide, with 10-16 interstria and fibulae in 10 um) and heavily silicified. It also makes beautiful resting spores. When I first saw those spores, I couldn't figure out what it was and called them "the thing". I know now what they are, but in my raw counts they are still "the thing". Old habbits die hard.
