This is my first spring in the US. A whole new continent, with new birds, new plants! So much to explore!
I'm amazed how little attention Americans pay to plants. I was trying to find a field guide for Ames, for Iowa, for the US... Nothing beyond "most common plants" with 20 species or a key without pictures.
So here is my first attempt to identify at least something.
The pictures are taken in ISU campus, near Lagomarcino Hall, Osborn Drive, Ames, IA. This is certainty a magnolia. In Europe I've seen only M. grandiflora. Here the genus is much more interesting! I think it's Magnolia × soulangeana, aka saucer magnolia, a hybrid between M. liliiflora (from southwest China) and M. denudata (from central and eastern China).
